Arsenal and England suffer major blow with forward Mead having ruptured ACL

Arsenal and England have been dealt a significant blow with the news that forward Beth Mead has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Gunners announced the news this afternoon via an update on their official club website.

Mead sustained the injury during Arsenal’s 3-2 Barclays Women’s Super League defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening. Mead was replaced by youngster Michelle Agyemang deep in second half injury time.

The forward’s injury has now been fully assessed by the Arsenal medical team and it has been confirmed that Mead has ruptured her ACL. The player will miss the remainder of the domestic season while Mead is now a real doubt for England’s participation at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 which starts on 20 July 2023.

Mead will see a specialist in the coming days and her full recovery time may then be determined. Given the fact that players usually need nine months or more to recover from this kind of injury, Mead’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 hopes really do seem to be hanging by a thread.

A further update on the player’s condition is likely to be provided by Arsenal in due course.
