Skinner demands consistency from Manchester United ahead of Old Trafford return

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner wants his side to deliver another performance on the big stage when they face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils stunned Barclays Women’s Super League title rivals Arsenal in their last league outing, Skinner’s side winning 3-2 in front of around 40,000 Gunners fans at the Emirates Stadium.

That result in North London a fortnight ago was a real statement of intent from Manchester United and Skinner has called on his side to continue to impress on the big stage starting with this weekend’s game at Old Trafford.

“We love to play at Old Trafford but regardless of that, it is about performance for us,” Skinner said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We did it against Arsenal and I want to see that consistency of us taking the process to the opponent in these big games.

“It is a continuous working project and we have got to keep showing the fans the qualities that we can have against very good teams, that is our responsibility to the game. If you don’t put a good spectacle on, why would people want to come and watch it? That for us is our responsibility and that will help bring out the fans in their hoards to come and support our team.”

Manchester United come up against an Aston Villa side who are aiming to record a third consecutive Barclays Women’s Super League victory for the first time this weekend. Skinner recognises the growth of this Aston Villa team under Carla Ward.

He said “They’re progressing, they’re investing and given their results and the players that they have signed this year, they’re putting themselves in a position to be talked about with some of the best teams in the league.

“For us, it is a challenge, we know their qualities, they have quite a few and we know the progression route that they are taking. It is not about anything other than putting our best effort into this game.”

The Barclays Women’s Super League fixture between Manchester United and Aston Villa kicks-off at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
