Brighton can hold their heads high despite defeat at Manchester City says Merricks

Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim manager Amy Merricks said that her side could hold their heads high despite going down 3-1 to Manchester City at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.

Three first half Manchester City goals were ultimately the Sussex club’s downfall. Brighton & Hove Albion were better in the second half and they even managed to pull a goal back late in the game through Lee Geum-min.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim boss Merricks said that she was generally pleased with her side’s performance despite the defeat.

“First half, there were some key areas that we needed to improve on,” Merricks admitted. “I think we did that at half-time and we came out better in the second half, the players applied themselves to the idea of what we wanted to do and as a result of that, we kept a clean sheet in the second half.

“They are going to have opportunities, they have quality players but I think we limited that and we created for ourselves.

“I think we can hold our heads high today in terms of how we showcased ourselves and we have something to build on.”

Despite conceding three first half goals, Brighton & Hove Albion kept their shape well and defended bravely in the second half. Merricks paid tribute to her defenders and she believes that there is a good platform to build on at the back.

She said “In terms of the second half, we defensively showcased what we are capable of doing. I think we showed that we can be composed as well when defending our final third, I was particularly pleased with that.

“I thought our back-line were excellent today, especially in the second half because they have some real threats.

“I certainly think there are real positives to build on defensively moving forward.”

Brighton & Hove Albion are back in action next Sunday when Everton are the visitors to The People’s Pension Stadium in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
