Leicester City manager Willie Kirk says that lessons can be learnt from latest opponents Liverpool’s form in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season.
The two clubs are set to meet at Prenton Park on Sunday. Leicester City are bottom of the table and still without a single point to their name while Liverpool have enjoyed a three-match unbeaten run in the league.
It hasn’t always been easy for Liverpool this season. After a shock 2-1 victory over Chelsea on opening day, Matt Beard’s side went five league matches without a positive result. Liverpool continued to put trust in their process and that has resulted in their current three-match unbeaten run.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Leicester City boss Kirk said that his side can take heart from how Liverpool have gone about their business.
“Beating Chelsea was a nice start to the season for them, they announced themselves as a WSL team again,” Kirk told FAWSL Full-Time. “Everybody was surprised that they didn’t follow that up with anything positive or anything tangible (in their next five league games).
“I don’t think their performances have changed that much actually between the start of the season and now. They picked up a massive three points then got nothing for four or five games and they followed that up with three games unbeaten. I don’t think their level of performance has changed much but sometimes, things just fall in place for you. That’s a good example for us that if you keep doing the right things, your time will come in terms of getting points and Liverpool are in that position now.”
Leicester City have lost all of their four away games so far in this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League. Despite suffering those defeats, The Foxes have generally performed well on the road. Kirk went on to say that he hasn’t really highlighted the solid away performances but it is a positive point that can be taken into this weekend.
He said “I’ve really just tried to focus on my four weeks but Everton away was a real fighting, spirited performance and we lost in the last minute, the Reading game was lost in the closing stages and West Ham was in the closing stages. If you look at it like that, the away form hasn’t been too bad in terms of points that we could have potentially picked up.
“The away form is okay but I don’t think we are overly bothered about that. We enjoy playing at The King Power but every team enjoys playing there because it is such a fantastic surface and it’s a fantastic arena. That maybe goes against us sometimes until we can find a way of getting a foothold in these games.
“I think we are looking forward to the game this weekend.”
Leicester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday.
