Conti Cup fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland postponed due to frozen pitch

The FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup group fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland has been postponed due to a frozen pitch at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

The two Barclays Women’s Championship rivals were set to meet in Bamber Bridge this evening but the game will no longer go ahead after the pitch failed a 10am inspection.

The game always looked likely to be postponed given the fact that most of the UK has been hit with sub-zero temperatures in recent days. The two sides were set to meet at the same venue in the third round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup last Sunday but that game was also postponed due to a frozen pitch. The conditions have only got worse since the weekend.

With both Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland having lost all of their matches in this season’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup, tonight’s game would very much have been a ‘dead rubber’ affair. While the game may be rescheduled for early 2023, a decision could be made to declare the match void with nothing riding on the result. That would certainly help the two clubs given the hectic schedule ahead.

The Vitality Women’s FA Cup third round tie will now be contested by the two clubs at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium on Sunday 8 January 2023. Information on the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup game will be provided in due course.
