Liverpool complete the signing of defender Bonner

Liverpool have completed the signing of defender Gemma Bonner on a free transfer after the player recently left Racing Louisville.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Liverpool this morning.

Bonner re-joins the Merseyside club for a second spell after previously representing The Reds between 2012 and 2018. She will officially become a Liverpool player once again on 1 January 2023.

In her first spell, Bonner captained Liverpool to back-to-back FA Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. She made 115 appearances for the club in all competitions, the second-highest appearance tally in the history of Liverpool’s women’s team. Bonner was a hugely popular character around the club in her initial spell and everyone at Liverpool will be delighted to see the defender return.

After completing her move, Bonner said “It’s a pretty special moment for me. I still pinch myself when I’m coming into Anfield.

“I’m super-excited to be back and I can’t wait to pull the shirt on again and get out there with the girls – and get back playing for Liverpool.

“I was here for quite a while before, it was a hard decision to leave but I think I always knew within myself that one day I would love to come back to Liverpool. Now the time feels right.

“The team have started the season really well, obviously had a successful season last year getting back into the top league. They’ve got good foundations and are definitely building.

“Hopefully, I can come in and contribute to the continued progression.”

Bonner could make her second debut for Liverpool when they take on Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village on 15 January 2023.
