Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that his side must earn the right to regain momentum following the mid-season break.
The Cityzens went into Christmas unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions, winning nine of those games. Manchester City have plenty of work to do in the second half of the season if they are to qualify for Europe, challenge for the title and win some silverware.
Manchester City return to action following the mid-season break with a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United this evening and head coach Taylor says that his side must earn the right to continue their first half of the season form in 2023.
“It’s always difficult when you are in a good moment to stop and restart again,” Taylor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “The important thing for us is to not just expect to slip straight back into the rhythm straight away, I think we need to earn that. To earn it, we need to be really smart with a lot of the things that we do.
“We are capable and the opportunity is there for us to pick up from where we left off and really attack the second half of the season.”
This evening’s opponents West Ham United have enjoyed an excellent first half of the season themselves and Taylor believes that The Hammers will look to progress even further this year.
He said “Paul (Konchesky) has come in and done a good job. There have probably been consistent messages there from Olli (Harder) previously, he worked with Olli so there will be a good understanding from him. He knows the club really well, he was a player there so they’ll be looking to push on and try to get into the top half of the division and even further.
“They’ve got players who have got decent experience, young players to go with it as well who are carrying an attacking threat.
“We are looking forward to the game, we have played West Ham a lot over the last couple of seasons in a few competitions so it’s a game that’s a decent start for us and hopefully, we can get a good performance.”
Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United kicks-off at 6.45pm.
