Phillips hails ‘fantastic’ London City Lionesses performance in victory over Crystal Palace

London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips hailed her side’s fantastic performance after they defeated Crystal Palace 5-0 at Hayes Lane last night.

Karin Muya netted a brace while there were also goals for Sarah Ewens, Jamie-Lee Napier and Lucy Shepherd as The Pride ran riot in Bromley.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, London City Lionesses boss Phillips hailed her side for their fantastic performance and said that the result was fully-deserved.

“The performance was fantastic because we felt a little bit off the pace from the form that we had before the break when we played Portsmouth last weekend,” Phillips said.

“For us to come out and to look really good on both sides of the ball, whether it’s high pressing them in the first half or finding attacking transition moments in the second half, I think it’s credit to the girls throughout because it was a fantastic performance and they really do deserve that.”

London City Lionesses were relentless from the first whistle, pressing their opponents when out of possession and working the ball into spaces when in possession. Phillips went on to say that her side were out for revenge after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture and that The Pride came with an in-depth game plan.

She said “We knew where we wanted to go after and again, credit to the girls because they really went after that area in the first half with our high press.

“How could they not be up for this game? It was the only three points that we dropped in the first half of the season. They knew the occasion, we talked about what to expect, where we need to manage the game and where we need to be clinical. It really is credit to the team because they were fantastic tonight.”

All three of London City Lionesses’ forwards that started the match got themselves on the scoresheet. Phillips was delighted with their contributions whilst also highlighting the good work of her attacking substitutions.

“Atlanta (Primus) and Lucy Shepherd came on and combined for the last goal as well so you have got five forwards in goal involvements,” Phillips said. “We said at the end that there’s nothing better than that because we know that we have also got goals in other areas as well as our front-line.

“I’m pleased for them, for Jamie (Napier) and Karin (Muya) especially, they worked so hard and are so dangerous so it’s nice to see them reap the rewards tonight and get a couple of goals.”

London City Lionesses are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Bristol City in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
