Chelsea have moved to the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table following a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at The Breyer Group Stadium this afternoon.
Jess Carter, Lauren James and Guro Reiten got the goals for The Blues as they took full advantage of Manchester United’s slip up to move to the league summit.
Chelsea took the lead in the eighth minute when Erin Cuthbert’s inch-perfect cross was headed home by Carter.
Spurs weren’t behind for long and when Drew Spence played the ball into the feet of Beth England, she fired her effort home for her first goal against her former employers.
Chelsea regained the lead nine minutes later through some fascinating individual play from James. She cut in from the right and kept going and going before placing the ball into the bottom corner of the Spurs net.
Emma Hayes’ side extended their lead just after the hour mark through Reiten. The Norwegian international advanced through the middle of the field before beating Spurs keeper Tinja-Rikka Korpela in a one-on-one situation.
Spurs pulled a goal back in the final minute through substitute Nikola Karczewska but it was too little, too late as the North Londoners fell to a sixth straight league defeat while Chelsea moved to the league summit.
Rehanne Skinner’s side will now turn their attentions to next Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while Chelsea’s next match is a FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup semi-final at West Ham United in midweek.
