England boss Wiegman includes Ramsey and Coombs in Arnold Clark Cup squad

Everton loanee Emily Ramsey and Manchester City midfielder Laura Coombs have received call-ups to the England squad for the 2023 Arnold Clark Cup.

The Football Association announced England head coach Sarina Wiegman’s 26-player squad via an official press release this afternoon. The Lionesses were the winners of the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup in 2022.

Goalkeeper Ramsey makes the step up into the senior squad from the Under-23s while midfielder Coombs returns to the England set up for the first time since November 2020.

In other squad news, captain Leah Williamson is back in the squad after missing the November camp through injury while forward Jess Park again makes the cut. Arsenal’s Beth Mead is out as a result of her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury while Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly is again listed as a defender despite her goalscoring exploits for her club.

Following the announcement of her latest squad selection, England head coach Wiegman said “The first camp of the year is always important to set the right tone for what comes next, especially with such a big opportunity in the summer. We are only looking forward now and we have to stay humble and focused on working hard. We know the fans will be with us again and we can’t wait to see them at every stadium.

“We had a positive experience with the Arnold Clark Cup last time. We had three tough matches with different challenges in each one, and we were able to learn a lot from our performances and work on many details which we are aiming to do again.”

England begin their defence of the Arnold Clark Cup with a match against South Korea in Milton Keynes on 16 February 2023. The Lionesses then face Italy in Coventry on 19 February 2023 before ending the tournament with a fixture against Belgium in Bristol on 22 February 2023.
