Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall says that a positive mindset is hugely important as the club look to become more successful both domestically and internationally.
The Gunners will be aiming to end a four-year trophy drought when they take on Chelsea in the 2022/2023 FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup final at Selhurst Park this afternoon.
Arsenal’s opponents Chelsea are serial winners when it comes to domestic trophies. The Blues have won eight domestic trophies in the period that their London rivals have remained trophyless.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Arsenal boss Eidevall said that both clubs can work to become more successful and it is all about having a positive mindset.
“It is about learning and developing,” Eidevall said. “Domestically, Chelsea have won a lot but if you look internationally, they have a habit of losing when they play important games.
“If you ask Chelsea about that, they would probably say that the next step is to grow into a team that can win consistently on the international stage. They will think that is possible and we think it is for us, both domestically and at international level.
“If you are imprisoned by your mindset and say that it is going to be hard then it will be hard. We need to have that belief and optimism that things can change, you can learn and develop. Just because it happened one way yesterday, it can be different tomorrow if you work at it, so that’s what we are aiming for.”
One player who has played a major part in Chelsea’s success is forward Sam Kerr. The Australian international has scored four goals in the last two FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup finals while she also netted in a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in a league fixture at Kingsmeadow last weekend.
Commenting on managing Kerr’s threat, Eidevall said that it cannot be about Arsenal putting all of their focus onto a single player.
He said “I think Sam Kerr is good player but whenever you play a team like Chelsea, you can’t only focus on one player. It is about how you work as a collective to stop that.
“You can see from the game last Sunday the number of touches and situations that she had, it wasn’t a lot. For most of the game, we were doing a really good job. It is about continuing to do that until perfection.”
The 2022/2023 FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup final is scheduled to kick-off at 3pm. The match is a sell-out with no further tickets available to purchase on the day.
