Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that his side will need to be ruthless with their chances when they travel to Kingsmeadow to face Chelsea this afternoon.
The Red Devils take on The Blues for the right to end the weekend top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table. Manchester United currently hold a one-point advantage on Chelsea at the summit, although the South West Londoners have the benefit of a game-in-hand.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Manchester United boss Skinner said that this afternoon’s game could be viewed as his side’s biggest of the season.
“It doesn’t get much bigger,” Skinner said. “It is a good game, it will obviously be a difficult game, if not the most difficult game away to Chelsea.
“I would imagine that Emma (Hayes) will have them fired up and in a good space ready to play us, so we will have to be at our very best for sure.”
Manchester United and Chelsea have both scored 38 league goals this season. The Red Devils’ goals have come from a whole range of different sources. Skinner went on to say that having different players scoring different types of goals was part of his plan and that his side must be ruthless this afternoon.
He said “Part of the design is the different types of goals that we score. On one occasion, we have had six different goalscorers, on two occasions, five different goalscorers, seven occasions, three different goalscorers. It is an amazing statistic really because what it does show is that we score from many different ways.
“That was in the design because when you look at how we played last year, you could probably box us into two dimensional certain ways of scoring. What we have been able to do is find different ways of scoring and that’s got to continue. Even in the games before this last few where we weren’t scoring as many as we needed to score, we were still creating the chances to score them, that’s the most pleasing.
“We have to be ruthless against Chelsea because we won’t get many chances. We have to take the chances when we create them.”
Manchester United’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 12.30pm.
