‘If you don’t score, you get punished’ – West Ham boss Konchesky reflects on Aston Villa defeat

West Ham United manager Paul Konchesky said that his side’s failure to take their chances cost them as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at The Chigwell Construction Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers were chasing the game after Rachel Daly’s 34th-minute opening goal for the visitors, however, it could have been a different story if Risa Shimizu, Viviane Asseyi or Amalie Thestrup had broken the deadlock earlier in the contest.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, West Ham United boss Konchesky said that there were positives to take from the performance but ultimately, you have to take your chances.

“In spells, we were the better team today,” Konchesky said. “I know that the result doesn’t show that but I think that in spells, we were the better team.

“With the chances that we had in the first half, we should have gone ahead but it wasn’t to be. Over the 90 minutes, we wanted the three points but we have come away with nothing.

“I’ve said to the girls that when you are on top and you get chances, if you don’t score, you get punished. We are getting punished at the minute, it has happened two weeks on the trot now. Those things have to change, we have to start scoring more goals but equally, we need to keep the ball out of our net and become harder to beat.”

The Hammers have enjoyed a successful season but progress has stalled a little in recent weeks. Konchesky believes that fortunes will change with a bit more luck.

He said “Sometimes in football, you need a little bit of luck and we are not getting that at the moment. We could do with a little bit but we have to make our own luck sometimes as well.

“We need to be a team that is hard to beat and try to pick up some points along the way.”

West Ham United return to action on Saturday 25 March when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
