Former Chelsea and England goalkeeper Carly Telford has announced her retirement from playing at the age of 35.
The Newcastle Upon Tyne-born stopper made the announcement via a post on her personal Twitter account this afternoon.
Telford has enjoyed a senior playing career that has lasted for more than two decades. The keeper started out with Sunderland before representing Leeds Carnegie, Chelsea, Perth Glory, Notts County and San Diego Wave. The player played her final minutes as a professional footballer during the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.
The most successful spells of Telford’s career came with Chelsea. The player spent two periods with The Blues; she first represented the club between 2010 and 2013 before returning in 2017 and going on to spend almost five more years with the South West Londoners. Telford won seven domestic trophies with Chelsea including three Barclays Women’s Super League titles.
On the international stage, Telford won 27 senior caps for England. The keeper was included in Lionesses squads for three FIFA Women’s World Cups along with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017. Telford won the SheBelieves Cup with England in 2019.
Telford was an incredibly popular player both at club and international levels and she will be missed after opting to hang up her boots.
