Manchester City record crucial victory over Chelsea to stay in title race

Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League title dreams go on after they recorded a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.

Filippa Angeldahl and Lauren Hemp got the goals for The Cityzens in the first half as Gareth Taylor’s side added another twist to the title race.

Manchester City have dropped just two points since losing back-to-back fixtures at the start of the season and they continued that fine form as they took control of the game in the opening 45 minutes. Angeldahl put The Cityzens ahead in the 21st minute when she stroked the ball from the edge of the 18-yard box into the far top corner, leaving Ann-Katrin Berger rooted to the spot. It was a delightful finish worthy of the occasion, however, Lauren Hemp soon went one better.

With her back to goal, Laura Coombs laid the ball off for the on-rushing winger and she drilled her shot first time into the top corner, leaving Berger grasping at thin air.

Barring a Melanie Leupolz volley in stoppage time, Chelsea never looked like getting back into the contest in the second period as the hosts managed the game expertly, despite several tactical switches from Emma Hayes. It was very much a game of control for the blue half of Manchester as the visitors were left floundering, unable to muster a shot on target in the second half.

This afternoon’s victory has moved Manchester City level on points with local rivals Manchester United at the top of the table. The Red Devils sit at the summit on goal difference. Chelsea drop down to third as a result of the defeat but they know that their fate is still in their own hands as they have a game-in-hand.
