Momentum can snowball for Brighton says interim head coach Merricks

Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim head coach Amy Merricks believes that momentum can snowball for her side in the coming weeks.

The Sussex club are winless in eight matches in the Barclays Women’s Super League but there has been a marked improvement since Merricks was appointed interim boss for the second time this season earlier this month.

Merricks has overseen Brighton & Hove Albion in their last three Barclays Women’s Super League fixtures. In those games, they have given both Chelsea and Manchester City a tough time while they claimed a point at Reading last time out.

When speaking in a Brighton & Hove Albion press conference ahead of the fixture against Manchester United, Merricks said that she can feel the momentum about to swing into the club’s favour and that it could snowball in the closing weeks of the season.

“I feel like we are so close, I feel like we are at tipping point; we are making momentum, we are taking great strides,” Merricks said. “I feel like we are at tipping point on this edge where momentum is about to really come with us and it can snowball for the rest of the season. That isn’t going to happen through luck or chance, that’s going to be through our own actions and our own doing and we will stand up and face that.

“We are all committed to the fight, we are all committed to competing and we will make it extremely difficult for Manchester United this weekend. We will focus on competing and trying to get something out of this game. I absolutely believe that we can when we are at our best.”

Brighton & Hove Albion face Manchester United in back-to-back fixtures with the two clubs also set to contest a Vitality Women’s FA Cup semi-final tie after the international break. Merricks went on to say that the focus has to be on this afternoon’s league encounter.

She said “We have to focus on this game first. The league is really important to us and we have to make sure we perform this weekend. We are going to have to make sure that we are fully-focused consistently because they’re a good side, look where they are in the league.

“We are going to have to be at our very best but the good thing is that speaking to the squad this week, everyone is prepared to fight. We will compete, we will fight and we want to make sure that when teams come to our ground, they dread it and that we make it difficult for them. We made it difficult for Manchester City and we will be looking to do it again this weekend.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at 11.30am. Limited tickets remain available and can be purchased by clicking here.
