England lucky to have a ‘great manager’ in Wiegman says Manchester United’s Toone

Ella Toone says that England are lucky to have such a talented head coach in Sarina Wiegman.

In a little over 18 months, Wiegman has guided the Lionesses to four trophies. England most-famously lifted a first major title under Wiegman last summer when they won the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. The Lionesses have also secured two Arnold Clark Cups while they were the winners of the inaugural Women’s Finalissima following a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Brazil at Wembley last week.

When speaking to the media ahead of this evening’s Alzheimer’s Society International against Australia at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, Toone paid tribute to head coach Wiegman.

“Sarina is a great manager and we are all very lucky to have her here,” Toone said. “We are all excited to be on this journey with her. We have achieved so much as a team already and we want to just keep improving as players under Sarina.”

England go into this evening’s match against Australia unbeaten in 30 matches in all competitions but they were made to work hard for their latest positive result against Brazil. Toone said that the Lionesses took plenty of learnings away from that match.

She said “Every game that we play in, we always take lots of learnings away, that game especially.

“First half, we put on a great show, we kept the ball really well and probably could have been more than 1-0 up. The second half changed and it was about how we dealt with that. Obviously, we’ve looked back on it all, reflected on it and we have taken a lot from that game.

“Every game that we play in, we make sure we watch it back and learn from it.”

England come up against an Australia side which is packed full of players who play their club football in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Despite having the familiarity of the Australian squad, Toone said that England’s preparation for the game hasn’t changed.

“There are a lot of players who play here but this is an international game, another big game,” the attacker said. “We want to test ourselves against top opposition, so we prepare like any other international game and we will go out there and stick to the game plan that we have. Hopefully, it’ll be another successful game.”

England’s Alzheimer’s Society International against Australia kicks-off at 7.45pm.
