Liverpool manager Matt Beard says that his side probably need one more win to make absolutely sure of Barclays Women’s Super League survival.
With six games remaining, Liverpool are six points above the relegation zone. The Reds have also played a game less than three of the four sides below them.
Liverpool’s latest fixture sees them come up against a Brighton & Hove Albion side that are under new management. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, manager Beard said that one more win should be enough to guarantee Barclays Women’s Super League football for Liverpool again next year. He also believes that Brighton & Hove Albion will do enough to survive under new head coach Melissa Phillips.
“Mel (Phillips) is a good manager,” Beard said. “It was a surprising appointment with her just going to America but she’s made a fantastic impact already.
“Brighton are a good team with a fantastic set-up and they have some good players. I guess at the start of the year, they lost their way a little bit but looking at how the fixtures pan out, I’m sure they will be ok.
“With how the results have gone, we probably need one more win to guarantee that safety. It will be a tough game but we’re looking forward to it.”
This weekend’s fixture will be Phillips’ third in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion. Despite the recent changes, Beard knows enough about what to expect from The Seagulls.
He said “It’s very similar to London City Lionesses, they are very compact. You could see in the Manchester United game that they went between two formations.
“They are quite direct, they get bodies forward and they want to play in the opposition half to put them under pressure. They have scored five goals in the last two games but also conceded five.
“They have had two really good performances against two good sides so we need to be prepared.”
