Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that six more points should be enough to secure a fifth-place finish in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
The Villans have been exceptional this season. The club are virtually guaranteed a first-ever top-half finish while they have a five-point advantage on Everton who currently occupy sixth position.
Aston Villa will look to continue their excellent campaign by putting in another solid performance against Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon. With five games to go, head coach Ward believes that six points will be enough to seal fifth spot.
“I think that the girls have been excellent home and away this season,” Ward said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “No matter where we are playing or who we are playing, the goal is to try and keep getting points on the board.
“If we look, we probably need another six points from the final five games for fifth spot, so that’s the aim.”
Latest opponents Spurs finished in fifth position last season but a turbulent campaign this year has resulted in a relegation battle. Ward knows that replicating this season’s form next year will be tough but the target is to continue the club’s steady growth.
She said “We are under no illusions that it doesn’t happen without a lot of hard work and support. I think that we’ve got to make sure that we continue to grow.
“Most will say that we have overachieved this year, so it is then about what success looks like next year and I think another top-six finish would show that.”
Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 2pm.
