Leicester City boss Kirk calls for improved performance against Liverpool

Leicester City head coach Willie Kirk wants his side to be better with the ball when they take on Liverpool at The King Power Stadium this afternoon.

The Foxes won the reverse fixture 1-0 at Prenton Park back in February but Kirk believes that his side can improve on that performance.

When speaking ahead of this afternoon’s meeting at The King Power Stadium, Kirk said that his side must be better in possession of the ball and try to have control of the game.

“We have to improve our performance from the last Liverpool game, we won that game 1-0 but we believed that the performance was really below par,” Kirk said. “There were a number of things that we didn’t do very well.

“We scored quite early but never really had any control in the game. Liverpool were quite direct but I thought we defended really well with a lot of resilience.

“There were some strong elements from it but we felt that we could do a lot better with the ball and we will be hoping to do that in the reverse fixture. If we can use the ball as well as we did against Reading and create the same amount of chances, that will give us a really good foundation to win the game.”

Despite Leicester City being bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table, Kirk is pleased with the development of his side since taking over in November. He said that The Foxes have prepared for the situation that they find themselves in and that his side are capable of moving out of the relegation zone this afternoon.

He said “We’ve set a points target, we’ve blanked the table out and the league table that we look at is really healthy. We are continuing to try to push as high up that table as possible and we know that if we do that, the live WSL table will look pretty healthy as well.

“We came off the bottom but I said that there was a chance that we would be back on the bottom again because there was a gap before we played another game. I think because we’ve done it once now, it doesn’t faze anybody. We firmly believe that we will put ourselves in a position where if we perform how we know we can perform, we can move off the bottom of the table after the game against Liverpool.”
