Chelsea attacker Fran Kirby will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 with the player set to undergo surgery on a troublesome knee injury.
The Blues provided an update on Kirby’s fitness this afternoon via a post on their official club website.
Kirby sustained her knee injury during Chelsea’s 7-0 victory over West Ham United in the semi-finals of the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup at The Chigwell Construction Stadium back in early February. The player has been rehabilitating over the last three months but she has been unable to return to the required level of fitness. Following a further review by the Chelsea medical team, it has been determined that the player requires surgery.
Chelsea have confirmed that Kirby will remain on the sidelines for a significant period of time. The player is expected to miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 which kicks-off in a little over two-and-a-half months’ time, handing another blow to England head coach Sarina Wiegman. The attacker also misses the end of season run in with her club, which includes the 2022/2023 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley.
A further update on Kirby’s condition will be provided by Chelsea in due course.
