Calm and confidence key for successful survival bid says Spurs’ interim boss Jepson

Tottenham Hotspur’s interim head coach Vicky Jepson says that it is important for her side to be calm and confident as they enter their last three games.

The Lilywhites are yet to secure Barclays Women’s Super League safety but one more win should be enough to achieve that short-term goal.

Spurs travel to the Leigh Sports Village to face Manchester United in their latest fixture this afternoon and interim boss Jepson says that being calm and confident is key to ending the season strongly.

“I’m confident and calm in our approach to these next three games,” Jepson said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “The girls are training well, we’ve had two positive results where we haven’t come away empty handed but that doesn’t mean that I’m happy with a point because I’m certainly not, I want three, we all want three points from every game that we play.

“We are in a good place mentally, physically we are looking sharp and we’ve now got more players back in the squad to give us more options to change things if we need to in those moments, if the game goes a little bit flat.

“Calm and confidence is what we have to have in these last three games.”

Spurs pushed Manchester United all the way in the reverse fixture before going down 2-1. Jepson says that her side can take confidence from their performance in that match.

She said “Yeah, absolutely. We took it right to the wire which was great. It’s confidence that we can take from it but we know that Manchester United are the best team in the league at the moment, they’re sitting top of the league. They score goals regularly and if they don’t, they can take it to the last minute of the game to score which we saw against Aston Villa last weekend.

“They often score late in games, so in terms of how we start and finish the game, we need to make sure that we are really focused on the task and that the subs are really focused on their jobs when they come on.

“It’s going to be a full 90 minutes, there could be highs and lows. If there are any lows, they won’t drag us down. We’ve got that bouncebackability to make sure that we can put ourselves in a position to compete. I am confident in our group, we are in a good place mentally and we are going to the North West to compete, I know we will do that.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester United kicks-off at 12.30pm.
