‘We expect to get over the line’ – Kirk discusses Leicester City’s penultimate challenge

Leicester City manager Willie Kirk says that his side are focused on what they need to do to secure Barclays Women’s Super League safety.

After going into the Christmas break on zero points, The Foxes have enjoyed a successful second half of the season and they could secure Barclays Women’s Super League safety this weekend if they beat West Ham United at The King Power Stadium and Reading fail to win at Tottenham Hotspur.

When speaking to the media ahead of the West Ham United game, Kirk said that his side are in an excellent position and that the focus is firmly placed upon getting over the finish line.

“It’s quite exciting because we have worked so hard to make sure it’s in our hands with two games to go,” Kirk said. “If you had offered us that on the 1 January, we would have bit your hand off to know that it is in our hands with two games to go.

“We expect to get over the line and that’s what the focus is, to do what we have to do.”

West Ham United will arrive in the East Midlands winless in 10 matches in all competitions, however, Kirk knows that his side’s latest opponents have plenty of goal threats.

He said “By their own admission, they’ve had a poor second half of the season but when we’ve analysed them, we have realised that they have four or five top players. I think that they are top players and they are widely-recognised across the league as top players.

“We need to make sure that we are on our game because it could be the first half of the season West Ham that turn up or the second half of the season West Ham that turn up. We don’t know, we can’t control that, so what we can control is the intensity that we play at, the decision-making that we’ve got and the emotional control that we’ve got. We will certainly be bringing those three things to the game.

“We are trying to get a mix of the Reading and Liverpool performances because I feel that we ticked every box across the two games but in any individual game, we have been left frustrated with some parts of our game. Between those two games is the performance that we are looking for.”

Leicester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against West Ham United kicks-off at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
