Chelsea extend Kirby contract by a further year

Chelsea have taken up a one-year extension option in the contract of long-serving attacker Fran Kirby.

The Blues announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

Kirby joined the South West Londoners from hometown club Reading in 2015 for a transfer fee which was rumoured to be in the region of £40,000 to £60,000, a figure that would have been a British record at that time. Since joining Chelsea, Kirby has become a firm fans’ favourite.

The attacker is currently Chelsea’s top scorer with 110 goals in 175 appearances in all competitions. Kirby has gone on to lift no less than 13 trophies with The Blues including six Barclays Women’s Super League titles and four Vitality Women’s FA Cups. She was also a member of the team which featured in a first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2020/2021.

Kirby is currently recovering from surgery on a troublesome knee injury that she sustained in a FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup semi-final tie at West Ham United back in February but it is hoped that the player will be able to return to action early next season.

News of Kirby’s contract extension provides Chelsea with a boost off the back of the recent announcement that two other long-serving players in Madga Eriksson and Pernille Harder will be leaving the club this summer.
