Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner feels that his side deserve a lot of credit for their performances this season.
The Red Devils go into the final game of the 2022/2023 campaign at Liverpool this afternoon with an outside chance of winning a first Barclays Women’s Super League title.
Regardless of what happens on Merseyside, Manchester United will finish the season in their highest-ever position in the league table. The club have qualified for Europe for the very first time and they recently contested a first major domestic cup final.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Liverpool fixture, Manchester United boss Skinner said that his side don’t always get the credit that they deserve.
“Maybe we don’t get enough credit for what we have done this season,” Skinner said. “Everybody talks about injuries to other teams and of course, they can happen but I think we deserve a lot of credit this year.
“We’ve broken records, we are high up statistically in loads of areas. Performance-wise, everybody talks about late goals and having a bit of luck but you have to still be pushing to get goals late on, it’s a mentality thing.
“Other teams get a lot of credit for how they’ve done but for us to break into that top three and to do it in the way that we have done by breaking records and playing the way that we’ve played, I feel that this team deserves a lot of credit.”
Manchester United defeated Liverpool 6-0 in the reverse fixture at the Leigh Sports Village and Skinner knows that you can read nothing into that huge winning margin ahead of this afternoon’s fixture.
He said “I admire Matt (Beard), he builds together teams that fight for each other and that’s always dangerous because that sometimes plays beyond tactics.
“The 6-0 game at home in my opinion wasn’t a 6-0 game, it shouldn’t have been a 6-0 game. We took chances, we got a little bit of luck at times but it was never a 6-0 game in my opinion. I know Matt wasn’t happy with the energy levels of his team but it shouldn’t have been a 6-0 game.
“It’ll be a lot tighter than that and we’ve just got to concentrate on us. We’ve got one game left to give all of our energy out, get it out before the summer and enjoy it, not play it like an end of season game. It is about playing the game and knowing how to play hard against Liverpool at their home ground.”
Manchester United’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 2.30pm.
