Chelsea defender Mjelde signs new one-year deal

Chelsea defender Maren Mjelde has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

The Blues announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

Mjelde has spent the last six-and-a-half years with Chelsea after joining the club from Avaldsnes IL in November 2016. The player has gone on to make 131 appearances for The Blues in which she has scored 22 goals. Mjelde has helped Chelsea to win 13 domestic trophies in her time with the club.

While the competition for places has increased at Chelsea in recent years, Mjelde has kept building her own levels and she remains an extremely reliable member of the team. The Norwegian international does the simple stuff very well in defence while her dead ball qualities make her a real asset going forward.

After agreeing to stay with Chelsea for another year, Mjelde said “I feel really happy, Chelsea is my club and it has been for six-and-a-half years. I’m happy to stay here, it’s been my home for a long time and I’m really excited for next season.”

Mjelde’s contract extension comes off the back of teammate Lauren James signing a new long-term deal with the club last week. James has committed her future to The Blues until summer 2027.
