Birmingham City defender Martha Harris says that she is ready to start pre-season training as the club prepare for a renewed promotion push in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
The Blues’ squad report back after the summer break next week and they will spend seven weeks preparing for the new season.
The club have spent the close season securing the services of some of their key players including full-back Harris. When speaking to Birmingham City’s official media team after signing a two-year contract extension with the Blues, Harris said that she can’t wait to get back on the training ground.
“A few of the girls will be away at the World Cup but it’ll be a good time for us to get together and work hard,” Harris said.
“It’s a little bit hot so I’m not looking forward to all of the running but it’ll be good. I’m just ready to get going.”
Harris joined Birmingham City on a free transfer last summer. The player had a bright start to life at St Andrew’s before suffering a knee injury that ruled her out of action for almost five months. After returning to fitness, Harris believes that she refound her form and she wants to carry her personal momentum into the new season.
She said “I felt good going into the first couple of games last season but then I hurt my knee.
“At the end of the season, I wanted the games to keep on coming. Now, I’m ready to go again this year.”
Birmingham City ended the 2022/2023 campaign in fine form. They recorded seven consecutive league wins as they pushed Barclays Women’s Championship title rivals Bristol City all the way. The Blues lost out by just a single point and Harris believes that the team will take huge confidence from that unlucky eventual defeat.
“We were very close last year and it could give us some hope and belief going into this season,” Harris said.
“The aim is to get promoted and hopefully, we can do that this year.”
