Arsenal confirm signing of former Manchester United forward Russo

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of former Manchester United forward Alessia Russo.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Gunners this afternoon.

Russo joins Arsenal on a free transfer after her contract at former club Manchester United expired last month. The Red Devils wanted to retain the England international, however, Russo opted for a fresh challenge.

The forward spent the last three seasons with Manchester United. She made 59 appearances for the club in all competitions in which she scored 26 goals. Russo helped Manchester United to finish one place higher than new club Arsenal in last season’s Barclays Women’s Super League.

After completing her move to Arsenal, Russo said “I’m really excited to be here and I can’t wait to get going. I want to win trophies – as does everyone in this club. I can’t wait to get stuck in and grow as a player – it’s a new challenge and a new environment.

“I think the growth of the women’s game has been incredible, but particularly at a club like Arsenal. The sell-out against Wolfsburg at Emirates Stadium last season was fantastic, and I’m just really excited to be part of this club.”

Russo becomes Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall’s third signing of the summer transfer window.
