Defender Alex Greenwood has called for calm off the back of England’s underwhelming performance against Haiti yesterday.
Only a retaken Georgia Stanway penalty was able to separate the European champions and the tournament debutants in Brisbane as England struggled to record a 1-0 win.
While Haiti received widespread praise for their performance after the game, there were few positives to be taken away by England, however, defender Greenwood has called for calm with the Lionesses having got three points on the board.
“It’s important not to get carried away with the first game,” Greenwood said when speaking on Lionesses Down Under. “If we look back to the EUROs, we won our opening game 1-0 and it probably wasn’t our best performance of the tournament.
“I think with the first game, the most important thing is just to get the win. We were creating chances and we wanted to stop them creating chances but it’s tournament football, you have to adapt against the teams you play against.”
Greenwood did not hide away from the fact that there is lots that England can improve but she believes that things will slot into place over time.
She said “We’ll look back on the game and the chances we created where we could have done a little bit better. We hold ourselves to such a high standard, so we will come away from the game thinking we can do this better or that better. It is important that we look at that, but as the tournament goes on and things click in training, those things will come together, so we’re not getting too carried away, we’re just looking at the small details.”
England are next in action on Friday when they face Denmark in their second FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 group match in Sydney.
