Arsenal midfielder Godfrey joins Charlton Athletic on loan

Arsenal’s teenage midfielder Freya Godfrey has joined Barclays Women’s Championship club Charlton Athletic on loan for the 2023/2024 campaign.

The Addicks announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

Godfrey is a product of the Arsenal academy system. The youngster played in two Barclays Women’s Super League matches at the end of last season while she also spent time with FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division club Ipswich Town to aid her development.

The midfielder needs regular game time in the elite game to grow and she will be hoping to get that at Charlton Athletic this season.

After joining The Addicks, Godfrey said “I’m buzzing, I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve seen the way that [the team has] been developing throughout the years, getting better and better, and it’s just something I wanted to be a part of.”

Godfrey’s arrival at The Oakwood means that Charlton Athletic head coach Karen Hills has now added five new players to her squad this summer. Kate Longhurst, Sian Rogers, Kayleigh Green and Elisha N’Dow have also joined the South East Londoners during the close season.

Charlton Athletic kick-off the new season with a home fixture against Sheffield United on Sunday 27 August 2023.
