Reading lose new signing Kuyken to ACL injury

Reading midfielder Ava Kuyken will miss the 2023/2024 season with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Royals announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

The circumstances around how and when Kuyken sustained her injury have not been disclosed by Reading. The club have confirmed that the player has undergone a recent scan which has identified a rupture of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).

Kuyken joined Reading in the current transfer window off the back of a short spell playing her football in Scotland with Hibernian. The midfielder has previous Barclays Women’s Championship experience from her time with former club Bristol City.

The former England youth international was looking forward to pushing on with her career in the second tier but she will now have a lengthy wait before pulling on a Reading shirt again.

Commenting on the injury, Reading’s General Manager, Brooke Chaplen said “We are all incredibly disappointed for Ava, but her health and well-being are our top priorities. Our medical team will provide her with the best possible care and support as she embarks on her recovery journey. We have no doubt that Ava’s determination and resilience will see her come back even stronger.”

With more than two weeks left until the start of the new Barclays Women’s Championship season, Reading may look to source a short-term replacement for Kuyken.
