ENGLAND SQUAD: Manchester United’s Le Tissier one of three to receive England recalls

Manchester United’s Maya Le Tissier has been named in the 24-player England squad for their September fixtures against Scotland and the Netherlands in the inaugural UEFA Women’s Nations League.

Lucy Staniforth and Jess Park also return to England duty after missing out on representing the Lionesses at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official press release from The Football Association this afternoon.

Keira Walsh and Bethany England are absent from the squad due to injury. Tottenham Hotspur forward England recently announced the news that she had undergone hip surgery earlier this month.

The UEFA Women’s Nations League fixtures see Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses return to action for the first time since their defeat to Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 final at the end of August.

Speaking after the latest squad announcement, England head coach Wiegman said “By the time we play our first game, it will be little more than a month since the World Cup final. We have had little time to reflect on all we have achieved so far this year. Instead, we will have to make sure the players are fresh enough and ready to perform straight away, if we want to go far in another competition.”

The Lionesses’ first game in the UEFA Women’s Nations League is against Scotland at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland before they take on the Netherlands in Utrecht.

Commenting on the upcoming fixtures, Wiegman said “We will play a derby match against Scotland and they have shown good development recently and are getting stronger and stronger, while we know all about the Netherlands of course and the very talented players they have.

“It is the first time we have had the Nations League in the women’s game, and it will mean even more competitive matches for us to test ourselves. While the time to look back on a special period for us will come at the end of the year, it will be good to see the fans again in Sunderland. We have a great connection with the North East and I know they will give us tremendous support again.”

The Lionesses take on Scotland in their first UEFA Women’s Nations League fixture on Friday 22 September 2023, before travelling to face the Netherlands on Tuesday 26 September 2023.
