Liverpool defender Gemma Bonner hailed the team’s unbeleivable effort after they defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.
Miri Taylor netted the winning goal for The Reds early in the second half as they stunned The Gunners in their own back yard.
Defender Bonner was a rock at centre-back for Liverpool but she wanted to share the plaudits with her teammates when speaking to WSL Full-Time after the match.
“Coming into the game, we knew that we have had a bit of a rough week as a team,” Bonner said. “When our backs are up against the wall and everything is stacked against us, that’s when we are at our best.
“Nobody gave us a chance before the game but the belief that we have in this squad showed out there on the pitch and we thoroughly deserved to come out with a win.
“The effort that the girls put in from back to front, it was an unbelievable effort.”
It was very much a team effort from Liverpool who put their bodies on the line time and time again to keep Arsenal out. Bonner was pleased that The Reds were able to do enough to get the win.
She said “We’ve had a lot of new signings come in but we had worked really hard in pre-season to make sure that they settled in as soon as possible.
“Coming away to Arsenal with their fans, it makes it really hard to communicate out there. It wasn’t the prettiest performance from us but everyone put their bodies on the line and we did what we had to do to get through.
“We knew that we would have moments and get chances and it was up to us to take them, that’s what we did. We were definitely put under pressure but it was an unbelievable effort.”
After starting the season with a shock victory, Bonner says that Liverpool must build consistency in both results and performances in the coming weeks.
“We had a strong finish to last season and we knew what we were capable of,” Bonner said. “We’ve showed that we can beat the top teams and now, it is about having the consistency. We’ve got to take that consistency into the other games. We are probably going to be less of an underdog now but we have got to thrive on that and take confidence from it.”
Liverpool are back in action next Sunday when they face Aston Villa at Prenton Park.
