Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Melissa Phillips says that she is hoping to see further growth in her side’s performance against West Ham United this weekend.
The Seagulls opened the new season with an excellent 2-1 win over Everton at Walton Hall Park last weekend. Forward Elisabeth Terland netted both goals for the Sussex club.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s next assignment is a home fixture against a West Ham United side that lost to Manchester City on opening day. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Phillips said that she is looking for further growth in her side’s level of performance against an opponent who are aiming to get off the mark.
“Of course, they’ll (West Ham) want to bounce back,” Phillips said. “Looking at the game (against Manchester City) and some of their comments around it, they thought it was a really strong performance, so they’ll look to improve on that.
“We came up against them in pre-season, so both sides will have an idea of what to expect.
“It’s about our performance growing from the last and being as sharp as we can be on the day. Ultimately, mindset is really important in that and how hungry we are to go and perform again.”
There were some tight scorelines and surprise results on the opening weekend of the season and Phillips knows that this year’s Barclays Women’s Super League could be the most competitive yet.
She said “I think we all appreciate that the WSL is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. You see the way that so many squads went away and strengthened throughout the summer months.
“Every game will be competitive for sure.”
