Brighton boss Phillips hails Terland’s professionalism ahead of Manchester City fixture

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Melissa Phillips has hailed the professionalism of in-form striker Elisabeth Terland ahead of her side’s trip to Manchester City this weekend.

The Norwegian international has made an impressive start to the season. Terland has scored five goals in five Barclays Women’s Super League outings for The Seagulls.

When speaking to the media in a Brighton & Hove Albion press conference, head coach Phillips said that Terland’s good form is a direct result of the professional standards that she sets herself every day.

“I think she will always be a player who continues to step up her performance and take it to new levels year-in, year-out because of the way she prepares and reflects and what she commands of herself,” Phillips said. “She takes a lot of accountability, she’s continually watching clips, getting herself prepared physically. I think she’ll always demand that little bit more from herself every week and every year.

“It’s great to see her perform and finishing. I think she didn’t actually convert a lot of opportunities in pre-season, we’ve adjusted one or two things in how she was taking opportunities in front of goal and she finds herself chances in every game and she’s just been really clinical with making some of the adjustments. It’s fantastic to have her in great form but we also know she’s not the only source of goals, we think there’s a lot of places we’ll be able to exploit for the games ahead.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s latest opponents Manchester City are unbeaten at home in almost two years in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Phillips knows that her side will have to be at their absolute best this weekend to take anything from the game.

She said “Man City are a good team. They’re excellent in possession, they have a real ruthlessness in front of goal and attack wide and central areas very well, locating the threats. We know we’ll have to have a really top performance out of possession like we did in the last two and then we’ll need to manage the ball even better in terms of opportunities going forwards, in possession, being clinical in front of goal.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester City kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
