Beard disappointed with manner of Liverpool’s defeat to Chelsea

Liverpool manager Matt Beard said that he was disappointed with the goals conceded in his side’s 5-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

The Reds are usually so solid from front to back but they were no match for latest opponents Chelsea who eased to victory in South West London.

When analysing his side’s performance in the post-match press conference, Liverpool boss Beard said that he was bitterly disappointed with the manner of the goals conceded.

“For the first time in a long time, I’m disappointed,” Beard said. “When you play a team like Chelsea, you can’t gift them opportunities like we did today.

“If I look back at Tottenham last week, there were 39 turnovers which was uncharacteristic for us the way that we have started the season and that’s happened again today. If you analyse the goals, the first goal we’ve turned it over from a comfortable position and they score, second goal, seven seconds after she has thrown the ball, it is a goal.

“We prepared the players for that this week; we spoke about quick restarts and turning the ball over and getting punished. In the first half against Tottenham, we got away with it but you’re not going to get away with it against the likes of Sam Kerr.

“I’m really disappointed with the manner of the defeat, I don’t think we should be conceding five. I don’t think Chelsea had to work hard for their goals today and that’s the most frustrating thing.”

Liverpool struggled to manage Chelsea’s threats throughout the contest and Beard went on to say that on-field communication has been a problem for his side at times this season.

He said “If you don’t get within a yard, players like Lauren James can get in the pocket, turn and then you’re in trouble.

“I think communication was the biggest issue and it has been a problem all season. We’ve got a younger squad this year and maybe a language barrier at certain points is an issue.

“I felt that we dealt with a lot of things well but in the key moments, we let ourselves down.”

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday evening when they host Manchester United in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup.
