Bristol City head coach Lauren Smith says that beating teams in and around the bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table will be key this season.
The Robins currently find themselves bottom of the table and in the relegation zone after six games, however, they have shown lots of promise in many of their performances so far.
This weekend sees Bristol City travel to Walton Hall Park to take on ninth-placed Everton. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Smith said that while three points are not essential, her side do need to beat the teams in and around the bottom of the table.
“Every time we get a point, it’s going to be another huge step towards the long-term goal,” Smith said. “A win against another team down the bottom a bit like West Ham is going to be key. Instead of us being the chasers, we can be the ones being chased.
“All of those things can come out as strengths but ultimately, if it doesn’t go that way, we need to make sure that we are pushing so that the next opportunity doesn’t go the same way.
“It’s a big game but it’s not the last of those big games for us.”
Going on to discuss the challenge that Everton will pose, Smith believes that her side will have spells without the ball but overall, the game could be closely-contested.
She said “They really like to build up with the ball, they like to have possession. I think that could play into our hands or go against us at times. We need to focus on our strengths but they like to build through the thirds and they’ve got close to teams in some of their games, lost by narrow scorelines. It could be a very equal game.”
Bristol City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Everton kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
