Liverpool must defeat Bristol City to keep ‘knocking on the door’ says Beard

Liverpool manager Matt Beard says that a victory over Bristol City is important in his side’s bid to keep the pressure on the top four in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The Reds welcome the league’s lowest-ranked club to Prenton Park this afternoon. Liverpool go into the match in fifth position after an excellent start to the season.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Liverpool boss Beard said that it is important for his side to win the game if they are going to continue to push the top four.

“It’s important [to win] if we want to continue to be knocking on the door of that top three or four,” Beard said. “All of the home games are important for us, eight out of 11 we’ve won at Prenton Park. It’s important to carry that on.

“Bristol are difficult to break down and they’re dangerous on the counter attack, so that’s something that we have to be mindful of.

“It is important that we pick three points up at home and we just continue the run that we are on at the moment.”

Despite opponents Bristol City being bottom of the table, Beard has seen a lot of promise in their performances so far this season. He knows that his side must be aware of The Robins’ threats this afternoon.

He said “It’s tough but I think Lauren [Smith] has done a great job. When you make the jump from the Championship to the WSL, the gap is big but I think they’ve adjusted to it really well.

“I think the turning point for them was the Arsenal game because I don’t think they deserved to lose that. Their results have been good since then and if you look at the start of the year, 4-2, 5-0, 3-0 against Tottenham, they were shipping a lot of goals but that’s stopped now.

“I think they’ve done a great job, they’ve adjusted really well. They’ve picked up all of their points on the road which is something we need to be wary of. Lauren’s done a great job and it’s going to be a tough game.”
