London City Lionesses midfielder O’Neill announces pregnancy

London City Lionesses midfielder Sonia O’Neill has announced the news that she is pregnant and will miss the remainder of the season.

WSL Full-Time were made aware of the announcement via an update from London City Lionesses this morning.

The Venezuelan international joined The Pride in the summer. She made two appearances for the club in the opening weeks of the season but has not been involved in head coach Carolina Morace’s matchday squads since the 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in early October. The reason for O’Neill’s absence has now been revealed and the player is thrilled at the prospect of her new arrival.

“I’m excited to become a mum and thankful for the support everyone at the Club has shown me – it’s nice to see your coaches and teammates excited and happy for you as they’ve made my pregnancy a happy and enjoyable one,” O’Neill said.

“From my new nicknames and being cheered on in training, to asking about my appointments, wanting to see photos from my scan, and always checking in on me, it was nice to feel supported by everyone. I’m also grateful that I was able to continue training around the team, even when I was not directly on the pitch with them.

“With London City being a women’s-only club and our president being a woman, the environment was very compassionate and understanding of my situation. I can’t wait to have my little one put on the jersey.

“I hope for more wins and success in the second half of the season, while I support the girls from the side. I want to thank everyone for their support: staff, players, and fans. I hope to be back on the pitch soon, with an extra little London City fan in the stands.”

O’Neill will be cheering on from the sidelines for the final time in 2023 when London City Lionesses travel to Watford on Sunday.
