Aston Villa retain Conti Cup quarter-final place following independent tribunal

Aston Villa have retained their place in the quarter-finals of this season’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup following the conclusion of an independent tribunal.

The Villans brought on recent signing Noelle Maritz in their 7-0 group stage victory over Sunderland earlier this month, however, the player had already featured in the competition for former club Arsenal and was therefore ineligible to play.

As a result of the administrative error, Aston Villa’s place in the quarter-finals was thrown into doubt, however, the club have survived following an independent tribunal. It has been determined that Sunderland will be awarded the three points from the match which moves them top of the group, however, Aston Villa also still qualify for the quarter-finals as one of the two best runners-up.

The decision means that Manchester United drop out of the competition. The Red Devils were hopeful of being awarded their place in the quarter-finals following the independent tribunal but that has not happened, much to the club’s disappointment.

The quarter-final draw for this season’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup is scheduled to take place at 6.30pm this evening. The draw will be broadcast live on BBC News’ SportsDay show and on the BBC Sport website.
