Brighton & Hove Albion have announced the shock departure of head coach Melissa Phillips.
WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Brighton & Hove Albion just a short time ago.
The news comes as a complete surprise with Phillips having only held her pre-match press conference for this weekend’s game against Manchester United a few hours ago.
Phillips was appointed Brighton & Hove Albion head coach back in April. She successfully guided the club to Barclays Women’s Super League safety in the remaining games of last season. The Sussex club have put in some impressive performances against the top sides this year, although there were still some areas for growth with the club occupying 10th position in the league table.
Commenting on the club’s decision to part company with Phillips, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Technical Director, David Weir said “This is not a decision which has been taken lightly, but we feel it is vital for the progress we want to see in the Women’s Super League.
“We have invested heavily in the women’s squad and infrastructure going into this season, and results and performances have not been at the level we had expected, given that investment.”
Mikey Harris will take interim charge of the team ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village.
