Liverpool fixture ‘a very important game to win’ says Spurs boss Vilahamn

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Robert Vilahamn says that his side’s fixture at Liverpool is an important game to win in terms of the battle for league positions in the top half of the Barclays Women’s Super League table.

Spurs travel to Prenton Park to face Matt Beard’s Reds this afternoon. Liverpool go into the game in fifth position while Spurs are sixth. Both sides are level on 18 points from 12 games.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Spurs boss Vilahamn admitted that while he does not focus on the league table, the game is important if his side are to continue to compete with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool for fourth place.

“If you look at the top four and you want to go for that, it’s a very important game to win,” Vilahamn said. “It’s also important for the top five because they’re on the same points as us.

“We don’t look at the table right now, we look at performance and how we are going to develop the club.

“Liverpool are playing a fun way of defending and it’s going to be interesting to see how we can deal with that and be a little bit stronger in the press. Liverpool are a very good team in this league and they have taken similar steps to us.

“It’s not a ‘must-win’. We just have to keep playing and developing our style and in the long-term, we are going to win these games. We will see where we are in this game.”

Both sides were defeated by top three teams last weekend. Spurs lost 2-0 to Manchester City while Liverpool were defeated by Arsenal by the same scoreline. Vilahamn sees similarities in the challenges that Spurs and Liverpool have faced and he knows that both sides will be looking to bounce back on Merseyside.

He said “They are similar to us; we compete, play good football and then we play against the top four and realise that they’re on another level and you have to find other ways to beat them.

“They’ve beaten top teams but they’ve had some tough games recently. They’ve got some top players, their coach has been in this league for a long time and he knows how it works. We’ve lost games too and are trying to bounce back and they will do the same against us.

“It’s going to be a tough game but I think we are ready to play our way. We will try to win the game and make sure we have a good run in the back end of the season and finish even higher up the table.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Liverpool is scheduled to kick-off at 2pm this afternoon.
