Manchester United announce departure of captain Zelem

Manchester United have announced the news that captain Katie Zelem is leaving the club upon the expiry of her contract this summer.

The Red Devils revealed the player’s departure via a post on their official club website this morning.

Zelem spent her youth at Manchester United before representing Liverpool and Juventus at senior level. The player returned to the club in 2018 and she helped The Red Devils to the Barclays Women’s Championship title in her first season back in red and white. The midfielder has gone on to make 161 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions while she has scored 26 goals. Zelem was an Adobe Women’s FA Cup winner with the club this season.

With Zelem out of contract at Manchester United at the end of this month, it has been revealed that she will be taking up a new challenge next season. She leaves Manchester United as a club legend and an important figure in the rise of their women’s senior team.

News of Zelem’s departure comes less than 24 hours after Manchester United announced forward Lucía García’s exit. With goalkeeper Mary Earps also expected to move on, these are nervous times for fans of The Red Devils. Manchester United need a strong summer transfer window if they are to replace their significant losses.
