Newcastle United forward Amy Andrews has set her sights on winning the Golden Boot after scoring a crucial goal in The Magpies’ Women’s Sela Cup victory over AC Milan at St James’ Park yesterday.
Becky Langley’s side won the inaugural Women’s Sela Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory following a 2-2 draw in normal time.
Elysia Boddy’s stunning goal gave The Magpies an early lead but strikes from Nikola Karczewska and Valentina Cernoia soon turned the game in the visitors’ favour. Newcastle United looked set to lose the tie but Andrews popped up with a late equaliser to force penalties. After coming to her side’s rescue, Andrews also netted in the shootout as Newcastle United converted all four of their spot kicks.
When speaking in the post-match press conference, Andrews admitted that it was an amazing feeling to score a crucial goal whilst joking about the celebration which followed.
“It was amazing,” Andrews said. “It was just nice to see the fans so happy.
“I’m the kind of player who likes to celebrate, so I did a little celebration. Some people might find it cheesy, British people generally do, but I don’t care, it’s who I am and I think it really inspires the younger generation; little girls and boys might start doing it.
“It was absolutely amazing.”
Andrews joined Newcastle United from neighbours Durham earlier this summer. She netted eight goals in 27 outings for The Wildcats last season. Given the quality in the Newcastle United squad, Andrews is confident of increasing her goal contribution this term.
She said “I’m extremely confident [of scoring goals]. It’s a great group to be a part of, what a team and a group to be joining. It’s a dream come true.
“This was only our second game but I feel like we shown some bits and pieces. Once it comes together, I feel like we are going to have a good season.
“I feel very confident going into the season.”
The forward went on to discuss her personal aims for the new campaign and she revealed that she is aiming very high. Andrews wants to win the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top prizes in 2024/2025.
She said “I want to win the Golden Boot and I want to win Player of the Season. I want to win everything and get to the WSL with the club.
“Newcastle feels like home already and I’m not even a Newcastle fan. I feel like an adopted Geordie already.
“I’m ready to give my all this season and I will.”
Newcastle United kick-off their Barclays Women’s Championship adventure with a fixture against London City Lionesses at Hayes Lane on Sunday 8 September 2024.
