Birmingham City have completed the signing of Manchester United defender Lucy Newell on a season-long loan deal.
WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Blues this evening.
The 18-year-old has developed within the Manchester United academy system after joining the club from West Bromwich Albion. Newell has been in and around The Red Devils’ senior squad over the last 12 months, although she is yet to really stake a claim for first team minutes.
The youngster spent the second half of last season on loan at former Barclays WSL2 club Blackburn Rovers. She made 10 appearances for Rovers, gaining vital senior playing experience. She will now be hoping to take another step forward in her time with Birmingham City.
After joining Birmingham City on loan, Newell said “I’m really excited to be here. It’s a massive club with huge ambition and I’m looking forward to bringing my skills to the team.
“WSL2 is a challenging league where the competition is really high. I think playing at Blackburn has taught me how competitive it can be and I can’t wait to play for Blues and fight for that promotion.”
Newell is Birmingham City’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window.
