Sunderland defender Westrup signs new deal

Sunderland defender Brianna Westrup has signed a new one-year contract with the club.

The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

The 29-year-old defender is now under contract with the Wearsiders for next season while the club hold an option to extend the arrangement by a further year.

Westrup joined Sunderland in 2022 after leaving SWPL 1 club Rangers. She has cemented her place in head coach Melanie Reay’s starting XI, impressing with her performances week-on-week. Westrup has gone on to make 80 appearances for Sunderland in all competitions. She has helped the club remain competitive in Barclays WSL2 in recent seasons.

The defender is a key player for Sunderland and the club have moved quickly to secure her services for an extended period.

After signing on again with Sunderland, Westrup said “I’m delighted to sign a new deal with the club.

“It’s a really exciting time for Sunderland, so I’m looking forward to next season and seeing what we can accomplish together.”

Sunderland have retained the vast majority of their squad for 2026/2027. The club have 11 players under contract while negotiations are ongoing with two other first team players. Sunderland have also agreed professional deals with five academy graduates.
