Durham appoint Kirk as new head coach

Durham have appointed Willie Kirk as their new head coach.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Wildcats this morning.

The 48-year-old returns to the English game following a spell coaching in Sweden with Linköping FC and Djurgårdens IF. Kirk has plenty of experience coaching in the English professional game after previously spending time in charge of Bristol City, Everton and Leicester City. The Scot was also an assistant head coach at Manchester United.

Kirk has a strong record for improving team performance and he will be hoping to make an impact in what is a new era at Durham.

After being appointed Durham head coach, Kirk said “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Durham Women FC.

“From my very first conversations with Dawn [Hepple], Lee [Sanders] and Mark [Donnelly], it was clear that there is a genuine ambition to continue moving the club forward, and that really resonated with me.

“Durham has established itself as a respected club with strong values and a clear identity, and I’m excited by the opportunity to work with the players and staff to build on those foundations.

“I believe in creating an environment where people are challenged, supported and driven to improve every day, and I’m looking forward to getting to know the group and beginning that journey together.

“I can’t wait to get started and meet the supporters as we prepare for the new season.”

Kirk’s appointment comes after Durham’s long-term future was secured last month
