Manchester City have announced their second major signing of the summer with the acquisition of Jamaican international forward Khadija Shaw, known affectionately as “Bunny”, from French side Bordeaux.
Shaw was top goalscorer in Division 1 in France this season, averaging more than a goal per game in all competitions as she helped Bordeaux claim third spot in the league and UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification. The player is also the all-time record goalscorer for Jamaica with 42 goals in 30 games.
Manchester City announced the signing of Shaw via an official club press release this afternoon. The player joins The Cityzens on a three-year deal and Shaw will be donning the number 21 shirt with her new team.
City finished in second place in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League, just two points behind champions Chelsea. The introduction of Shaw could be just the shot in the arm that Gareth Taylor’s side need to reclaim the title next season.
After signing on at The Academy Stadium, Shaw said “It feels amazing to be a Manchester City player. I chose this club because I want to be a part of the environment, the culture and to play for this amazing team.
“I want to be tested and there is so much experience in the team here, so I know I will learn a lot from everybody around me.
“I grew up as a City fan, and I even have some family members who live in Manchester – when I told them about my move, they were so happy and excited.
“I’ve always watched the English game and it’s something that I’ve always wanted to be a part of – the Barclays FA WSL is growing and developing tremendously, and I feel as though this is the perfect move for me.”
Shaw follows England youth international Ruby Mace to The Academy Stadium as City look to attack on all fronts next season. City will again be contesting in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup, in two Vitality Women’s FA Cup competitions and in the league once the new season commences. Therefore, bolstering their squad depth is clearly on the agenda for Taylor and the addition of Shaw will strike fear in the hearts of Barclays FA Women’s Super League defences, let alone having the likes of Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp either side of her.
