Highly-rated Arsenal full-back Melis Mehmet will get her first taste of competitive senior football this season after joining FA Women’s Championship club London City Lionesses on loan.
The 17-year-old is being tipped to make the breakthrough with The Gunners but she is still awaiting her senior debut for the club.
Mehmet is a member of Arsenal’s WSL Academy team while she was drafted into the senior squad for the recent pre-season friendly match against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. Mehmet came off the bench to play the final 30 minutes of that game as The Gunners recorded a 2-1 win.
London City Lionesses announced the loan signing of Mehmet this afternoon. The agreement has been labelled as a dual contract, allowing the player and her parent club to remain closely connected throughout her stay at Princes Park.
After completing her move to The Pride, Mehmet said “I’m excited to have joined such an ambitious club, with great drive to help us as players to progress and reach our potential. I can’t wait to get started and showcase my ability at this level.”
Mehmet’s arrival in Dartford now means that London City Lionesses boss Melissa Phillips has added 10 new faces to her squad so far this summer. The new FA Women’s Championship season is a little over two weeks away.
