Birmingham City midfielder Murray fractures foot

Birmingham City midfielder Christie Murray will miss the start of the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season after sustaining a foot injury.

The 31-year-old Scotland international is understood to have sustained a fracture to her foot during a club training session according to reports on the Blues’ official website.

Murray was one of two players from last season’s squad to already be under contract for the new season. The midfielder signed a two-year deal with the Blues when she joined them last summer after leaving former club Liverpool on the back of their relegation to the FA Women’s Championship.

In her first year at Birmingham City, Murray represented the club on 16 occasions in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League while she scored two goals. The midfielder was one of four Scots to feature for the Blues last season.

Murray’s injury further enhances the need for Birmingham City boss Scott Booth to continue his summer recruitment mission. The club are thought to now have 15 senior players contracted to them for the upcoming campaign and Booth is likely to want to add two or three more before the season starts should the budget allow.

Birmingham City played out the 2020/2021 season with one of the smallest squads in the league and a series of injuries resulted in the club regularly struggling to name a full compliment of substitutes. Better luck with injuries and a little more squad depth is definitely on everyone’s wanted list going into the new campaign.
